A second set of responsibilities requires the board to use its prestige and connections to strengthen important relationships: linkages to donors, to political leaders and opinion makers, to government approval agencies, and, when necessary, to accrediting associations. Restoring or modifying an institution’s reputation or brand, which we define as a Stage II activity, rests on a relationship between the college and its several markets. Trustees need to understand the value of their institutional brand, as well as their duty to sustain and strengthen it.
Thus, three-quarters of the cases mentioned are drawn from private higher education. Where our comments might be construed as negative toward a school or its leadership, we do not disclose the names of institutions. But all the comments in the book are based on actual institutional experiences, as we understand them. Information from a project funded by the Davis Education Foundation was vital to the book.
